What these numbers mean: The average adds everyone up and divides — one billionaire in the room can drag it upward. The median is simply the middle person: half the country sits above them, half below, which is why we usually prefer it. A percentile is your place in a line of 100 people sorted from lowest to highest. And whenever we show a percentage, we also show what it means in actual people — because a percentile lands differently when you see it as millions of real households.
